The Inauguration of Indonesian batik is tomorrow (October 2nd, 2009). All of us from Indobatiks is inviting those of you who have Indonesian batik, to wear it tomorrow. Whether you’re going to work, school or just spending time with family and friends, wear it with PRIDE.

For those of you who lived in Houston area, Indobatiks will be walking down the discovery green park and downtown Houston to show the awareness. We will give out name cards and quizzes also for a chance to win prizes.

The Disaster in Asia

The typhoon in philippines have caused many people to lost their lives, and many lost their homes. The tsunami in Samoa have wrecked the tiny island. The earthquake in Indonesia have ruined the city of Padang in West Indonesia.

Indobatiks is in partner with bodyglove to support the red cross to help the disaster relief in those country. Also if you would like to help by donating some money, link are provided under this message.

Batik in Java Island

Batik was developed to the highest standards in Java. in Java the art of batik is very important among important people, such as the ruler of the states. This custom was once introduced by the hindu empire of Majapahit* during the 13th century, then it was followed by the Muslim empire of Mataram** during the 17th century, and the custom have always being use until the modern day. Today the custom is still being use not only by important people or ruler of states, but also by many ordinary people, even high school students wear them for their uniform. Indonesian people usually wears batik during a special occasion such as wedding, and meeting. People who work for the Indonesian government have to wear a batik uniform on Friday, middle school and high school students also wear a batik uniform on a certain day.

The two most well known batik cities in Central Java are Jogjakarta which located east of Jakarta and west of Surabaya, located right in the middle of the Java island, and the other is Surakarta or well known as the city of Solo, located east of Jogjakarta, south of Semarang city and west of Surabaya, not too far from Jogjakarta. The two cities used to be one states during the sultanate of Mataram, a muslim kingdom that was once conquering the Java island, and had influence many Javanese into Islam. After the Mataram kingdom had divided into to part, each city have their own special region, somewhat like kingdom or empire, it is well known with the name of Keraton. The ancient courts and building of each keraton still survived until today. The government of each cities have made some part of the keraton as a museum.

Batik have evolved in many ways, it spreads through out the island of Java. The west Java also known for the best brand of batiks. The city of Cirebon, Indramayu, Pekalongan are some of the cities that are well known for their good batik quality.

**Mataram dynasty was probably the first muslim dynasty in Java. It is believed that they were the first people to ever use batik for an important ceremonies such as wedding, meeting, etc. The kingdom of Mataram was divided in 1755 under an agreement signed in Giyanti between the Dutch under the Governor General Nicolaas Hartingh and rebellious prince Mangkubumi. The treaty divided nominal control over central Java between Yogyakarta Sultanate, under Mangkubumi, and Surakarta. [link]
